Notes
Themistoklis FOTIADIS was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1926 and died circa 2014.
He was a self-taught painter and also studied and taught agronomy at the University of California. He began painting systematically around 1964. His professional work as an agronomist brought him into close contact with the Cypriot countryside, its villages, farmers, shepherds, customs and traditional ways of life, which became central to his artistic subject matter.
Fotiadis’s work is closely associated with rural Cyprus and the preservation of local memory. His paintings often depict agricultural labour, shepherds, village scenes, traditional dress, domestic customs and moments from everyday life. Beyond their artistic value, his works also carry an important folkloric and documentary character, recording aspects of Cypriot rural culture that were gradually disappearing.
His painting is characterised by directness, narrative clarity and a sincere attachment to Cypriot life. Through simple compositions, expressive figures and carefully observed details, Fotiadis created images that reflect both personal experience and collective tradition. His works combine the immediacy of self-taught art with a deep knowledge of the people and customs of the countryside.
Themistoklis Fotiadis’s works have appeared in exhibitions, private collections and auctions in Cyprus. He remains recognised as a Cypriot painter whose work preserves, with affection and authenticity, the rural world and traditions of twentieth-century Cyprus.
