Notes
Kyriacos KOULLIS was born in Mousoulita, Cyprus, in 1918 and died in 2002.
He grew up in Mousoulita, a village in the Mesaoria region of Cyprus. He attended school only up to the third class of primary education and later worked as a house painter. In 1947, he settled permanently in Varosha, Famagusta, where he lived until the Turkish invasion of 1974. After the invasion, he stayed for a short period in Dhekelia and Limassol, before settling in Paphos in 1976.
Koullis began painting in 1971 and developed a direct, personal and highly recognisable artistic language. He became known as one of the most important folk painters of Cyprus, creating works that preserve vivid images of Cypriot rural life, customs and collective memory.
His paintings often depict village weddings, harvest scenes, traditional occupations, festivals, religious celebrations, domestic interiors and everyday life in Cyprus before 1974. His compositions are characterised by narrative clarity, bright colour, decorative rhythm and a strong sense of sincerity. Through simple forms and carefully arranged scenes, Koullis recorded the habits, clothing, architecture and social rituals of an older Cypriot world.
His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. Kyriacos Koullis remains recognised as an important Cypriot folk painter whose work offers both artistic value and a valuable visual testimony of traditional Cypriot life.
