Notes
Paul VAVLITIS, also recorded as Paul C. Vavlitis, was born in Cyprus in 1914 and died in 2004.
He moved from Cyprus to the United States as a teenager and later served as an aerial photographer with the U.S. Army Air Force during the Second World War. After the war, he trained as a visual artist and developed a career as a painter, becoming known especially for portraiture and scenes connected with Cypriot life.
Vavlitis’s work includes portraits of political and religious figures, as well as genre scenes, village subjects and compositions inspired by the customs and daily life of Cyprus. Through these works, he preserved images of Cypriot identity, tradition and collective memory, often presenting his subjects with dignity, warmth and narrative clarity.
His painting is characterised by careful draughtsmanship, descriptive detail and a direct figurative style. In his portraits, he paid close attention to likeness, expression and symbolic presence, while in his Cypriot genre scenes he captured familiar activities, costumes and social customs with documentary interest and affection.
Works by Paul Vavlitis have appeared in galleries, private collections and auctions, particularly in the United States and Cyprus. He remains recognised as a Cypriot-American painter whose work connects portraiture, diaspora experience and the visual memory of Cyprus.
