Notes

Andreas CHRYSOHOS was born in Milia, in the Famagusta district of Cyprus, in 1929.

He graduated from the Teachers’ College of Morphou in 1950. From 1952 to 1954 and again from 1957 to 1959, he studied painting at Goldsmiths’ College, School of Art, University of London. He later studied the psychology of children’s art at N.E. London Polytechnic from 1974 to 1976.

Chrysohos worked as a teacher and later as an art professor at the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus. He also served as an Art Inspector at the Ministry of Education, contributing significantly to art education in Cyprus. Alongside his painting, he has been involved in art criticism, icon painting and calligraphy.

He is recognised as one of the important Cypriot artists of the second generation, whose work developed through a close engagement with the landscape, people and cultural identity of Cyprus. His painting combines observation with sensitivity of colour and form, often reflecting the atmosphere of the Cypriot environment and the expressive possibilities of modern figurative art.

His work is characterised by careful composition, refined colour and a poetic approach to subject matter. Through landscapes, figures, religious themes and compositions connected with Cypriot life, Chrysohos developed a personal artistic language that balances modern expression with respect for tradition.

Andreas Chrysohos presented his work in solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, including in Greece, Cairo, Boston, London, Budapest, Prague and former East Germany. He also participated in the 7th Panhellenic Exhibition, the 7th Alexandria Biennale, the 1st India Triennale and the 34th Venice Biennale.

Andreas Chrysohos remains recognised as an important Cypriot painter, educator and cultural figure, admired for his contribution to painting, art education and the development of modern Cypriot art.
