Notes

Yannis TSAROUCHIS was born in Piraeus in 1910 and died in Athens on 20 July 1989.

He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Konstantinos Parthenis. He also studied Byzantine iconography with Fotis Kontoglou, whose influence played an important role in shaping his understanding of Greek tradition. During the 1930s, Tsarouchis travelled to Constantinople, Paris and Italy, where he encountered Renaissance art, Impressionism and the work of major modern artists, including Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti.

Tsarouchis became one of the leading figures of modern Greek painting and one of the most important representatives of the “Thirties Generation”. His work brought together elements of Byzantine art, folk tradition, classical antiquity and European modernism, creating a distinctive visual language closely associated with the idea of Greekness.

His paintings include portraits, interiors, still lifes, allegorical compositions and scenes from everyday life. He is especially known for his depictions of sailors, soldiers and male figures, rendered with clarity, sensitivity and a strong sense of theatrical presence. His compositions combine realism with poetic atmosphere, while his use of colour, light and form reflects both modernist influences and a deep engagement with Greek visual culture.

Alongside his painting, Tsarouchis worked extensively in theatre as a stage and costume designer, collaborating on important productions in Greece and abroad. He also wrote on art and culture and played a significant role in the intellectual and artistic life of twentieth-century Greece.

He exhibited widely in Greece and internationally, including in Paris, London and at the Venice Biennale in 1958. In 1982, the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation and Museum was established in his house in Maroussi, preserving and promoting his artistic legacy.

Yannis Tsarouchis remains one of the most influential Greek artists of the twentieth century, admired for his ability to combine Greek tradition with modern European painting and for his deeply personal vision of the human figure.
