Notes
Marcos KAMPANIS was born in Athens on 22 August 1955.
He completed his school studies at Athens College and studied painting at Wimbledon School of Art and St Martin’s School of Art in London, where he lived until 1980. During his time in London, he also attended a fine art restoration studio and the Apollo Etching Studio. In 1983, he lived for several months in Florence, painting landscapes and studying the museums of Italy.
Kampanis is a painter, printmaker, illustrator, muralist and curator. His work is closely connected with Greek landscape, memory, history and tradition, while also engaging with contemporary artistic language. He has worked across a variety of media, including painting, engraving, book illustration, church iconography, murals and, occasionally, stage design.
His imagery is often rooted in the Greek world, including olive groves, trees, ruins, interiors, myths, maps and symbolic landscapes. His work is characterised by clarity of form, refined colour, careful composition and a poetic sense of place. Although often described as realist, his paintings combine observation with memory and imagination, creating a visual language that moves between the familiar, the historical and the contemplative.
Kampanis has presented numerous solo exhibitions and has participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He has also executed murals in important religious sites, including the Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai and monasteries on Mount Athos.
Marcos Kampanis remains an important contemporary Greek artist, recognised for a body of work that bridges tradition and modernity through painting, printmaking, illustration and ecclesiastical art.
