Notes

Xanthos HADJISOTERIOU was born in Famagusta, Cyprus, in 1920 and died in Limassol in 2003.

He graduated from the Greek Gymnasium of Famagusta and studied commerce at the American University of Beirut. He later turned to art, studying painting and decoration at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London from 1951 to 1953. In 1959, he also attended the Byam Shaw School of Art in London.

Hadjisoteriou became one of the notable Cypriot painters of the twentieth century. His work is closely connected with Cyprus, its people, traditions and everyday life. He often depicted scenes of daily activity, village life, interiors and female figures, creating compositions that combine observation with a strong sense of rhythm, colour and decorative balance.

His painting is characterised by expressive form, harmonious composition and a personal use of colour. The female figure occupies a central place in his work, often presented with emphasised curves, monumentality and symbolic warmth. His compositions also reveal the influence of Byzantine art, folk tradition and modern painting, brought together in a distinctive personal style.

Alongside painting, Hadjisoteriou was active in interior architecture and decoration, developing an approach that was closely related to his artistic language. This wider interest in space, colour and design contributed to the structured and decorative quality of his paintings.

Xanthos Hadjisoteriou presented his work in solo and group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. He participated in international exhibitions, including the Alexandria Biennale, where he received an honorary distinction. His works are held in public and private collections and continue to appear in galleries and auctions.

He remains recognised as an important Cypriot artist whose work preserves, with colour, sensitivity and formal harmony, the atmosphere, people and visual culture of Cyprus.
