Notes
Tilemachos KANTHOS was born in Alona, Cyprus, in 1910 and died in Nicosia on 18 November 1993.
He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts between 1929 and 1939, with an interruption during the years 1932-1934. His teachers included Spyros Vikatos, Umbertos Argyros and Dimitrios Biskinis, while he also studied engraving under Yannis Kefallinos. During his student years in Athens, he came into contact with important figures of the Greek “Generation of the Thirties”, including Yannis Moralis, Yannis Tsarouchis and Nikos Engonopoulos.
Kanthos became one of the most important figures in modern Cypriot art. His work is deeply connected with the landscape, people and social history of Cyprus. The mountains and villages of his native region, the rural life of the island, the working people of Cyprus and the human condition became central subjects in his painting and engraving.
His artistic language is characterised by strong draughtsmanship, expressive line, sensitive colour and a profound understanding of light and form. In his landscapes, Kanthos captured the structure, atmosphere and emotional character of the Cypriot countryside, while his figure compositions reveal sympathy for ordinary people and a deep sense of humanity.
Following the events of 1974 in Cyprus, Kanthos created some of his most moving works, recording the suffering, displacement and trauma caused by the invasion. These works are among the most powerful artistic responses to the modern history of Cyprus, combining documentary force with emotional depth.
In addition to painting and engraving, Kanthos worked as an art teacher and stage designer. He taught at the Famagusta Gymnasium and later at the Pancyprian Gymnasium, contributing significantly to art education in Cyprus. His work was presented in solo and group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, and he represented Cyprus at major international exhibitions.
Tilemachos Kanthos remains recognised as one of the leading pioneers of modern Cypriot painting and printmaking, admired for his artistic integrity, technical mastery and profound visual interpretation of Cyprus and its people.
