Notes
Andreas ASPROFTAS was born in Tripimeni, Cyprus, in 1919 and died in Nicosia in 2004.
He lived in Famagusta, where he studied under Tilemachos Kanthos, whose teaching had an important influence on his artistic development. He later studied Medicine at the University of Athens, but the outbreak of the Second World War interrupted his studies and led to his return to Cyprus. He subsequently continued his artistic and musical education, graduating from the Cyprus National Music School and studying Fine Art at the School of Fine Arts in Perugia, Italy.
Asproftas became one of the notable Cypriot painters of the twentieth century. His work is closely connected with the Cypriot landscape, village life and the human presence within nature. Following the artistic climate established by Kanthos, he often painted the countryside of Cyprus, combining landscape with figures and scenes drawn from everyday life.
His paintings are characterised by sensitivity to light, balanced composition and a sincere attachment to place. Through landscapes, rural subjects and human figures, Asproftas developed a visual language that reflects the atmosphere, colour and quiet poetry of Cyprus.
He worked as an art teacher for many years, teaching in schools across Cyprus while continuing to paint. He presented several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad.
Andreas Asproftas remains recognised as an important Cypriot artist whose work contributed to the development of modern painting in Cyprus and preserved a lyrical image of the island’s landscape and people.
