Notes

Theodoros PANTALEON was born in Athens on 7 March 1945 and died on 17 June 2025.

He studied graphic arts at the Athens Technological Organization, the Doxiadis School, and painting under Ilias Dekoulakos. He emerged as one of the distinctive figures of post-war Greek painting, developing a highly personal visual language rooted in surrealism, fantasy and poetic imagery.

Pantaleon’s work is characterised by dreamlike compositions, lyrical atmosphere and meticulous technical execution. His paintings often bring together human figures, theatrical settings, symbolic objects and imaginary landscapes, creating a world in which reality and fantasy coexist. His artistic idiom has frequently been associated with the wider tradition of Greek surrealism, while also reflecting influences from figures such as Nikos Engonopoulos, Salvador Dalí and Giorgos Derpapas.

He presented numerous solo exhibitions, including at O Gallery, Athens in 1976; Galerie De Greef, Brussels in 1978; Galerie Zygos, Athens in 1978, 1981 and 1983; Yakinthos Gallery, Athens in 1982 and 1991; K Gallery, London in 1992; Titanium Art Gallery, Athens in 1994; and the Municipal Gallery of Syros in 2000. He also participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, including exhibitions at the Zappeion Hall, Athens, the National Gallery, Athens, and international presentations in Basel and Brussels.

Works by Theodoros Pantaleon are held in public and private collections in Greece and abroad, including the National Gallery in Athens, municipal galleries, the Copelouzos Museum, the Vorres Museum and the Marika Kotopouli Museum. He remains recognised as one of the important representatives of Greek surrealist painting, admired for the imaginative richness, theatricality and lyrical quality of his work.
