Notes

Susan KERR was born in London in 1943.

She studied painting, art history and graphic arts at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, from 1961 to 1965, receiving the National Diploma in Design. She then continued her studies in Art Education at Leicester University, where she received her Art Teacher’s Diploma in 1966.

In 1966, Kerr married the Cypriot artist Costas Joachim and moved to Cyprus, settling in Bellapais, the birthplace of Joachim. Together they established a working studio and gallery there, which became an important part of their artistic life until they were forced to leave in 1974. Between 1974 and 1977, she lived and worked in London and Athens before returning to Nicosia, Cyprus.

Kerr’s painting is closely connected with Cyprus, its landscape, interiors, light and atmosphere. Her work often explores the relationship between architectural space, nature and memory, with subjects including Bellapais, Kyrenia, shaded interiors, gardens and Mediterranean views. Her compositions are characterised by sensitivity to colour, structure and light, creating images that combine observation with a quiet poetic presence.

In addition to her painting, Susan Kerr has been active as an art educator. She taught art at the American International School in Cyprus from 1987, serving as Head of the Art Department until 1998, and later continuing part-time until 2008.

Her first solo exhibition was held at the Cyprus Hilton in 1969, and she has since presented numerous solo exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, including exhibitions in Germany. She has also participated in group exhibitions and cultural events in Cyprus, England, Germany, Greece and Italy, including the 6th International Biennale of Florence in 2007.

Susan Kerr remains recognised as a British-born Cypriot artist whose work reflects a long and intimate connection with Cyprus, its light, landscape and cultural environment.
