Notes

Renos LOIZOU was born in Paleometochon, near Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1948 and died on 16 June 2013.

In 1955, his family moved to London and later settled in Cambridge. Loizou studied at the Cambridge School of Art from 1963, developing his artistic practice within the British art environment while maintaining a strong connection with his Cypriot origins.

Loizou became known as a painter of highly structured and colourful landscapes. His work often explores landscape, villages, gardens, figures and Mediterranean subjects, rendered with a distinctive sense of rhythm, pattern and chromatic intensity. Cyprus, Greece, Spain and the English countryside all provided inspiration for his imagery.

His paintings are characterised by vibrant colour, carefully organised composition and a strong decorative quality. Through layered surfaces, bold forms and luminous tones, Loizou created works that transform observed landscapes into vivid, poetic and almost abstract arrangements. His visual language combines structure with emotion, bringing together memory, place and painterly energy.

He exhibited widely in the United Kingdom and abroad. His early solo exhibitions included a show at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, in 1969, followed by further exhibitions including presentations at Kettle’s Yard and Christopher Hull Gallery. He also participated in mixed exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Royal Academy in London and the Chicago International Art Exposition.

Works by Renos Loizou are held in important public and private collections, including Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, Fitzwilliam College, Gonville and Caius College, Magdalene College, the State Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art, the University of Surrey and the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation.

Renos Loizou remains recognised as an important Cypriot-born painter active in Britain, admired for his vibrant colour, structured landscapes and distinctive poetic interpretation of place.
