Part of a curtain from Siphnos, Cyclades, Greece

18th century

Silk on linen

145 x 36 cm

The embroideries of Siphnos are extremely rare. The only known complete curtain with this decoration is T.693-1919 at the Victoria and Albert Museum, consisting of four loom-widths of linen. It seems that other Siphnos curtains were made by joining vertical strips of half loom-widths, as in this case.
