A large cushion cover (proskefalada) from Skyros, Greece

18th century

Silk on linen

45 x 110 cm

A very good example of Skyros embroidery in excellent condition. The celebrated embroideries of Skyros are among the most sought-after Greek embroideries because of their unique, freehand designs worked with silk in vibrant colors. With influences from Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman art, they are a unique case in the history of Greek folk art thanks to their imaginative and bold decorative motifs. Here the circular elements in the center of the floral compositions refer to the decoration known “with the suns” [“me tous elious]”.
