Notes
Loukia NICOLAIDOU, also known as Loukia Nicolaides-Vassiliou, was born in Limassol in 1909 and died in London in 1994.
She was one of the pioneering figures of modern Cypriot art and is widely recognised as the first Cypriot woman to study art abroad. After completing her early education in Cyprus, she began taking drawing lessons by correspondence with the ABC School in Paris. In 1929, she moved to Paris, where she studied at the Académie Colarossi. From 1930 to 1933, she continued her studies at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, working in the studio of Lucien Simon.
In 1933, Nicolaidou returned to Cyprus and presented her first solo exhibition in Nicosia. Although her work was innovative for the local artistic environment of the time, it received limited public response. In 1937, she moved to London, where she lived for the rest of her life. In 1939, she participated in a group exhibition in Britain, receiving positive attention for her work.
Her painting is associated with post-impressionist tendencies and reflects the influence of European modernism, particularly the Nabis, Intimists, Fauves, Symbolists and Cubists. Her compositions often remain close to visual reality while introducing symbolic, allegorical and atmospheric elements. Colour plays a central role in her work, frequently applied in warm tones and broad areas, creating images of sensitivity, depth and poetic character.
Following her marriage to the ship-owner Ioannis Vassiliou, Nicolaidou gradually withdrew from active artistic life. Despite this, her contribution remains significant, both for the quality of her work and for her role as a pioneering woman artist in Cyprus.
Works by Loukia Nicolaidou are held in important collections, including the State Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art and the A. G. Leventis Gallery. She remains recognised as one of the earliest and most important female figures in Cypriot modern painting.
