Notes
Giasoumis GEORGIOU was born in Vokolida, Cyprus, in 1924 and died in Nicosia in 1999.
He began painting in the 1960s, developing a direct and highly personal artistic language rooted in the life, customs and traditions of Cyprus. Largely associated with folk and naïve painting, Georgiou created works that preserve vivid images of Cypriot rural society, everyday labour and communal celebration.
His paintings often depict village weddings, traditional occupations, harvest scenes, markets, craftsmen, musicians and episodes from daily life. Through these subjects, he recorded aspects of Cypriot culture and social memory with sincerity, narrative clarity and affection for local tradition.
Georgiou’s work is characterised by bright colour, simplified forms, decorative rhythm and a strong storytelling quality. His compositions are often full of figures and details, creating lively scenes that reflect both personal memory and the collective identity of the island. The Cypriot wedding, village customs and traditional professions became among his most recognisable subjects.
He presented his work in solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, including the Triennale in Bratislava in 1972 and the exhibition *Cypriot Artists* in Antwerp in 1973.
Giasoumis Georgiou remains recognised as an important Cypriot folk painter whose work offers both artistic value and a valuable visual record of traditional Cypriot life.
