Notes

Andreas CHARALAMBOUS was born in Nicosia in 1947.

He studied at the Surikov State Institute of Fine Arts in Moscow from 1969 to 1975. Between 1978 and 1980, he worked as Assistant Professor of Monumental Art at the same institute. In 1983, he was a visiting professor at Pratt University in New York. He later founded and managed Gallery “The Artist’s House” and, from 1980, ran his own Fine Arts School in Nicosia.

Charalambous is one of the notable Cypriot painters of the second half of the twentieth century. His work reflects a strong academic foundation, shaped by his training in Moscow, while also engaging with the history, landscape and cultural identity of Cyprus. His graduation work, *Cyprus 1974*, was exhibited in major venues in the Soviet Union, including the Academy of Fine Arts of the Soviet Union and Manege Gallery, and was also published in Soviet art magazines.

His painting is characterised by strong draughtsmanship, monumental composition and expressive use of colour. Through figurative subjects, historical references and symbolic compositions, Charalambous developed a visual language that combines personal expression with wider social and cultural concerns.

In addition to painting, he has been involved in poster art, book-cover illustration, translation of theatrical plays and lectures on the history of art. He has presented solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, including in Greece, the Soviet Union, former Yugoslavia, Germany and France. His works are held in important public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Cyprus and the art collection of the Cyprus Government.

Andreas Charalambous remains recognised as an important Cypriot artist and educator, admired for his contribution to painting, art education and the cultural life of Cyprus.
