Notes
Stylianos ATTESHLIS, also known as Daskalos, was born in Cyprus on 12 December 1912 and died on 26 August 1995.
Known by the name Daskalos, meaning “teacher” in Greek, he became one of the most widely recognised Cypriot spiritual figures of the twentieth century. He spent most of his life in Cyprus and was associated particularly with Strovolos, where he taught, received students and developed the spiritual system that became known internationally as The Researchers of Truth.
Atteshlis was educated in Cyprus and abroad and worked for many years at the Cyprus Government Printing Office, while also spending periods of his life in Africa. Alongside his professional career, he devoted himself to spiritual teaching, healing, writing, music, poetry and painting.
His teachings were rooted in Christian mysticism and esoteric Christianity, with emphasis on self-knowledge, love, healing, meditation and the spiritual evolution of the human being. For decades, he taught students in Cyprus and abroad, attracting followers from many countries. His lectures and teachings became particularly well known internationally through the writings of Kyriacos C. Markides, especially “The Magus of Strovolos”.
In addition to his spiritual work, Stylianos Atteshlis was active as a writer, poet, composer and painter. His creative practice reflected the same inner vision and spiritual concerns that shaped his teaching. Through his writings, music and art, he sought to express ideas of harmony, spiritual development and the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds.
Stylianos Atteshlis remains remembered as an important Cypriot spiritual teacher and cultural personality, whose influence extended beyond Cyprus through the international circles of The Researchers of Truth and through the continuing interest in his teachings and writings.
