Notes

This work is one of twelve depictions of rivers commissioned to decorate a pavilion of the International Exhibition of Salonica.

The River Series: Dafnos and Strymon are key works from The River Series, a landmark commission for the 1966 International Exhibition of Thessaloniki, where twelve leading artists each depicted a different Greek river. Vassiliou’s contributions were showcased in the exhibition’s central pavilion, underscoring his prominence in the Greek modern art scene.
Blending lyrical abstraction with landscape, Dafnos offers an intimate, textured meditation on a local river, rendered in oil on wood. In contrast, Strymon unfolds in a sweeping horizontal format, evoking the power and rhythm of one of Northern Greece’s most storied rivers.
While it is known that Vassiliou painted these two works for the series, whether he created additional pieces remains unconfirmed. Together, Dafnos and Strymon represent a rare opportunity to acquire works from a historic project that brought together some of Greece’s leading modern artists.
