Notes
This pair of mixed media works by Christoforos Savva exemplify the artist at his best, proving his versatility in working with a range of media and the ease and flair with which he did so. Always proving highly imaginative and experimental, being ahead of his time. Some motifs seen here are unique for Savva such as the “house” and particularly the “heart”, in fact we are unaware of another work by Savva depicting a heart motif. At the same time however, these somewhat segmented abstract compositions and the other motifs that are apparent here, are instantly recognisable in their design language (relating to many abstract oil paintings of this period of Savva). Therefore, clearly characterising these works to the period dating from 1965-1967. The use of these recurring motifs and overall approach to abstract design during this period suggest a profound influence from Savvas’ contemporary, Scottish artist Alan Davie (1920 – 2014). These mixed media works also incorporate patterned, printed fabrics which are mainly floral but also abstract. Not only do these elements add a textured, layered dimension to the works but they act as fragments from time, being print designs instantly reco gnisable from the period, thus acting as a further index for dating the works.
