Notes

Renos Evriviades WIDESON, also known as Reno Wideson, was born in Larnaca, Cyprus, on 12 December 1920 and died in 2020.

His interest in photography began in childhood, when his father gave him a Kodak Box Brownie camera. This early fascination developed into a lifelong dedication to photography and to the visual documentation of Cyprus.

Wideson attended the Pancyprian Commercial Lyceum in Larnaca. During the Second World War, he served as an officer in the Cyprus Regiment of the British Army. From 1941 to 1949, he directed the British Forces Cyprus Supplies Department, and later served as head of the Tourist Development Bureau under the British colonial administration.

As a photographer, Wideson became known for his sensitive and extensive record of Cyprus during the mid-twentieth century. His images document village life, traditional occupations, religious monuments, landscapes, architecture, festivals and everyday customs. Through his lens, he preserved aspects of Cypriot culture that were gradually changing or disappearing during the decades before and after independence.

His photography is characterised by clarity, compositional balance and documentary sensitivity. Works such as views of Famagusta, Lefkara lacemakers, village weddings, threshing scenes and historic monuments reveal both an artistic eye and a deep affection for the island. His photographs combine historical value with poetic atmosphere, offering a visual testimony of Cyprus and its people.

Wideson’s photographic archive has been presented in exhibitions and publications, including *Cyprus: Images of a Lifetime*, a photographic tribute to the island containing hundreds of images taken over many decades. His works have also appeared in auctions and private collections, where they are valued for their artistic and documentary importance.

Renos Evriviades Wideson remains recognised as one of the important Cypriot photographers of the twentieth century, admired for his enduring contribution to the visual memory and cultural history of Cyprus.
