Notes

The Virgin Mary (Theotokos) is depicted frontally, half-length, holding the Christ Child. The Virgin’s rich crimson maphorion, symbolizing divine love and purity, is adorned with finely worked silver stars set with semi-precious stones. Both the Virgin and Child wear ornate silver crowns, enhancing the sacred and regal quality of the image.

The Christ Child, dressed in an elaborately gold-embroidered tunic, blesses with His right hand and holds a scroll in His left, symbolizing divine wisdom and authority. Two angels on clouds bear a flowing banner inscribed in Greek:
“Χαῖρε, Τὸ Ῥόδον τὸ Ἀμάραντον, Ἡ Παρθένος ἡ Θεοτόκος” (“Hail, the Rose Unfading, O Virgin who bore God”).

Around the figures appear the inscriptions “ΜΡ ΘΥ” (Mother of God), “Τὸ Ῥόδον”, and “Τὸ Ἀμάραντον.”

The radiant gold-leaf background, delicately modeled flesh tones, and harmonious palette testify to the accomplished craftsmanship of a contemporary Greek workshop faithfully continuing the Byzantine iconographic tradition.

The title “To Rodon to Amaranton” (“The Rose Unfading”) refers to a poetic epithet of the Virgin Mary found in Byzantine hymnography, symbolizing her incorruptible spiritual beauty and everlasting grace. The combination of traditional iconographic canons with refined modern execution exemplifies the ongoing vitality of Orthodox artistic heritage.
