Notes

Lefteris ECONOMOU was born in Frenaros, in the Ammochostos district of Cyprus, in 1930 and died on 31 December 2007.

He received his early education at the Elliniko Gymnasio Ammochostou, where he was taught art by Telemachos Kanthos for two consecutive years. He later continued his studies in London, attending Central St Martin’s School of Art from 1949 to 1950, Sir John Cass College from 1950 to 1954, and Goldsmith’s School of Art from 1954 to 1955. Among his teachers were the sculptor B. Copnall and the painter and printmaker P. Drury.

Economou became one of the distinguished Cypriot artists of the second half of the twentieth century. His work focused mainly on the people, villages and landscapes of Cyprus, capturing both the rural and urban character of the island. His paintings often combine strong structure with a distinctive use of colour, creating compositions that are both decorative and deeply connected to Cypriot life and memory.

His artistic language is marked by clarity of form, sensitivity to place and a vivid chromatic quality that has often been associated with the visual rhythm of mosaic. Through portraits, village scenes, landscapes and everyday subjects, he developed a personal style that reflects the social and cultural environment of Cyprus while remaining open to wider modern artistic influences.

Lefteris Economou presented his work in solo exhibitions and participated in group and international exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, including in London, Greece, America, India, Europe and Egypt. In 1974, he participated in the Salon International de Mai, and in 1976 in International Grafik in Germany.

He was honoured with various distinctions, including the Cyprus Republic Award for Letters and Arts. Lefteris Economou remains recognised as an important Cypriot painter whose work preserves a vivid and poetic image of the island and its people.
