Notes
John CORBIDGE was born in Sheffield, England, on 3 February 1935 and died in Cyprus in November 2003.
He studied at Sheffield College of Art and later at the Slade School of Fine Art, University of London. After completing his studies, he travelled and worked in Italy, Greece and Cyprus. He first visited Cyprus in 1959 and, in 1960, settled in Bellapais, where he established his studio and became closely connected with the artistic life of the island.
Corbidge was a British painter whose work was deeply influenced by the light, landscape and atmosphere of the Mediterranean. Having spent much of his adult life in Cyprus and the wider region, he developed a personal visual language that brought together colour, form and symbolic imagery. His paintings often reflect references to Byzantine art, ancient culture and the expressive possibilities of Mediterranean colour.
His work is characterised by rich chromatic surfaces, strong compositional structure and a poetic sense of place. Through landscapes, figures and symbolic compositions, Corbidge created images that combine observation with imagination, often transforming the visible world into a more lyrical and timeless vision.
He exhibited widely in Cyprus and abroad, with solo exhibitions in Italy, France, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, the United Kingdom and Greece. His works are held in private and public collections internationally.
John Corbidge remains recognised as an important British artist closely associated with Cyprus, admired for his distinctive use of colour and for his artistic response to the light and spirit of the Mediterranean.
