Notes

Giorgos STATHOPOULOS was born in Kallithea of Agrinio, Greece, on 16 April 1944.

He studied painting and sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1966 to 1971. His teachers included Yannis Moralis, Nikos Nikolaou, Yannis Pappas and Dimitris Kalamaras. His academic training provided him with a strong foundation in drawing, composition and form, while his work soon developed into a highly personal and recognisable visual language.

Stathopoulos is one of the well-known Greek painters of the post-war generation. His work is often associated with a modern interpretation of popular art, rooted in Greek tradition while remaining fresh, direct and contemporary. His subject matter is primarily anthropocentric, often centred on the human figure, love, music, mythology, everyday life and poetic scenes of companionship.

His paintings are characterised by clear outlines, simplified forms, warm colour and a lyrical decorative quality. Through figures, birds, boats, musicians, couples and symbolic motifs, he creates a world of tenderness, memory and quiet joy. His visual language combines elements of folk art, ancient Greek imagery and modern figuration, producing compositions that are immediately recognisable for their sensitivity and charm.

In addition to painting, Giorgos Stathopoulos has worked in printmaking, illustration and scenography. He has presented many solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.

Giorgos Stathopoulos lives and works in Athens. He remains recognised as a contemporary Greek artist admired for the poetic simplicity, warmth and distinctive figurative character of his work.
