Notes

The present work was created by Giorgos Mavrogenis for the illustration of Andros Pavlides’ edition of Leontios Makhairas’ Chronicle. The scene depicts the murder of King Peter I of Cyprus by three noblemen in January 1369.

Giorgos MAVROGENIS was born in Limassol in 1928 and died on 25 May 2019.

After graduating from the Gymnasium of Limassol, he began working for the Municipality of Limassol. He later created his own artistic workshop, where he was involved in the construction of carnival floats, the decoration of halls for carnival dances, stage design and commercial advertising. Through this work, he became closely associated with the cultural life of Limassol and especially with the city’s carnival tradition.

Mavrogenis was a multifaceted Cypriot artist, active as a cartoonist, painter, sculptor, journalist and stage designer. He is particularly remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of Cypriot caricature, while his work as an artist extended across public sculpture, painting, theatrical design and visual satire.

As a sculptor, he produced mainly busts and public monuments in an academic style. His subjects were often inspired by Greek history, the Greek Revolution of 1821, mythology and Cypriot public life. His public works include busts and monuments dedicated to important cultural and historical figures, as well as memorial subjects connected with Cypriot and Greek history.

He also played an important role in journalism and satirical publishing. He served as editor of the newspaper *Satiriki* from 1964 to 1967 and again from 1969 to 1974, contributing significantly to the development of political and social satire in Cyprus.

Giorgos Mavrogenis remains recognised as a significant Cypriot artistic personality whose work brought together humour, public memory, civic identity and visual expression. Through his caricatures, sculptures, stage designs and carnival creations, he left a lasting mark on the cultural history of Limassol and Cyprus.
