Notes

Christos KANGARAS was born in Granitsa, Evrytania, in 1918 and died in 2010.

He came from a rural background and began life as a farmer and shepherd before turning to painting. Largely self-taught, he developed a direct and personal artistic language, drawing inspiration from the landscape, people and traditions of his native region. His talent was recognised by artists and intellectuals who encouraged him to continue painting and helped bring his work to wider attention.

Kangaras became known as a Greek folk painter, working in a naïve style marked by sincerity, vivid colour and narrative clarity. His subjects include village festivals, rural scenes, landscapes, religious imagery and episodes from everyday life. Through these works, he created a visual world closely connected with memory, popular tradition and the life of the Greek countryside.

His paintings are characterised by rare purity of expression, decorative rhythm and a distinctive use of colour. Although simple in appearance, his compositions often reveal a strong instinct for balance, movement and atmosphere. Scenes of panigyria, village gatherings and religious celebrations are among his most characteristic subjects, reflecting both personal memory and the collective traditions of rural Greece.

Christos Kangaras exhibited his work in solo exhibitions in Athens and his paintings have appeared in Greek and international auctions. He remains recognised as a distinctive representative of modern Greek folk painting, admired for the authenticity, warmth and poetic quality of his work.
