Notes
Andreas CHARALAMBIDES was born in Paphos in 1939.
He studied painting in Athens and later continued his studies at the University of Reading in England. In 1975, he was awarded a British Council scholarship to study British art. He also collaborated with Stass Paraskos in the establishment of the Cyprus Summer School of Art and the Cyprus College of Art.
Charalambides is one of the notable Cypriot painters of the second half of the twentieth century. His work draws on archaic, Byzantine and folk models, which he transforms into a personal visual language marked by poetic atmosphere, warm colour and symbolic depth. His compositions often focus on the female figure, presented with monumentality, stillness and a sense of timeless presence.
His painting combines modern artistic concerns with references to the cultural and visual traditions of Cyprus. Through carefully structured compositions, expressive colour and an atmosphere of mystery, Charalambides creates images that appear both contemporary and deeply connected to the past. His work often suggests memory, myth, ritual and the enduring presence of history.
Andreas Charalambides has exhibited widely in Cyprus and abroad, including in Greece, England, the United States, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, France and India.
He remains recognised as an important Cypriot artist whose work bridges modern painting with the archaic, Byzantine and folk traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean.
