ALI BEY EL-ABBASSI (Domingo Badía y Leblich)

Travels of Ali Bey in Morocco, Tripoli, Cyprus, Egypt, Arabia, Syria, and Turkey London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1816

First English edition. Two volumes, illustrated with engraved plates and folding maps. One of the most important travel accounts of the Islamic and Ottoman worlds of the early nineteenth century, written by a European traveler journeying in disguise as a Muslim pilgrim, and famously including rare first-hand observations of Mecca and Medina.

Of particular note is the exceptionally substantial section on Cyprus, comprising 46 pages, offering one of the earliest modern, systematic descriptions of the island under Ottoman rule. Ali Bey examines Cyprus’s geography, towns, population, administration, economy, and religious communities, making this work a key primary source for the history of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The most sought-after English edition of a cornerstone work of Middle Eastern travel literature, widely held in major institutional collections and highly prized by collectors.
