Nicholas Moore - The sea urchin collector

“Nick Moore paints in collaboration with his heart and his head.
He loves painting and above all he loves everything that the painted image alone can do.”John Craxton’s introduction to his forthcoming exhibition catalogue, in September 1999.

Having lived full time in Crete in the 80s, Nicholas Moore now divides his time between London and the Greek island of Syros, with a bit of New York thrown in for good measure. Using a palette of strong colours these bold paintings draw together a broad range of subjects, mixing memories of childhood, his mother, mythology, sex, constellations and the urban landscape. The artist at turns exposes and conceals his world using a wealth of signs and symbols.

In the catalogue Jonathon Green, lexicographer of slang, and social historian writes:
“It helps if you have a little astronomy, a little bit of Beach Boys, a little bit of Soho, of Greece, a good deal of the artist’s life. Fortunately for this lexicographer far out of comforting syllable friendly waters, these come across as reassuringly wordy pictures… Definitely one picture per thousand words time.”

Nicholas Moore’s work can also be seen in the large paintings commissioned for Blues restaurant at 149 Dean Street, Soho, London.
