ANGELOS (Panayiotou)

Greek, 1943

There is a richness in the handling of Angelos’s paint surface, a seductive succulence in the glowing colours. He places his subject floating in space, the starry sky a paradoxical setting for the fruits and flowers, which have been nurtured in the earth below, an invention which is peculiarly the province of this artist, and one which elevates the expression of feeling from the terrestrial to the spiritual.

Angelos’s paintings are about the meaning of life. They are optimistic, affirming the validity of the classical age before Christ as well as a belief in Christian values, yet at the same time he reminds us of the puniness of man in the universal scheme of things. Perhaps to strive for peace on earth is the ultimate good.
